Kristin Ziemke


Currently a first grade teacher, Kristin has taught primary grades in the Chicago Public Schools for the past 9 years; previously she taught in two suburban school districts. Nationally Board Certified, Kristin has a Masters degree in Instructional Leadership and an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education with a special education endorsement.

Kristin’s teaching engages students in authentic learning experiences where reading, thinking, collaboration and inquiry are at the heart of the curriculum. Kristin shares her curiosity with her students and models how to ask questions and seek answers. She encourages her students to share their learning through art and technology and empowers her students to take action by advocating for a cause or raising awareness for an issue. Featured on Stephanie Harvey and Smokey Daniel’s DVD Inquiry Circles in Elementary Classrooms, Kristin presents around the country on best practice literacy teaching and learning. Kristin also has extensive experience integrating technology with thoughtful classroom literacy practice and provides professional development on technology integration, conducting workshops on this topic around the country. In addition, she has an ongoing role as a consultant for the Chicago Public Schools and the Erikson Institute as well as Stephanie Harvey Consulting.

A recipient of the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Kohl McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Award, and the Earthwatch Educator Fellowship, Kristin serves on the editorial board for Catalyst Chicago and is a lab teacher for the Burley Literacy Institute which provides CPS teachers a week-long laboratory classroom experience with Stephanie Harvey and Smokey Daniels.
